It’s 6 a.m., I’m wide awake and jet-lagged in a tiny hotel room, and the only “gym” in this building is a sad exercise bike in the basement.
Sound familiar, girl? One trip and the workout routine you worked so hard for just… falls apart.
So here’s my fix, the same one I’ve been using on trips for years: a 20-minute hotel room workout with no equipment and no noise.
Six moves, twenty minutes, zero equipment. 🧳
You can do it in your PJs, on a patch of floor the size of a yoga mat, without waking a single soul in the next room 🙂
Once this routine lives in your back pocket, travel stops being the thing that wrecks your progress.
Why I Never Skip a Workout on a Trip
Let me tell you about the vacation that fixed this for me. Years ago I spent two glorious weeks eating, sightseeing and skipping every single workout, because hey, I was on holiday, right?
I came home sluggish, puffy and honestly kind of sad. Ugh… getting back into my routine felt like starting from zero, and it took me weeks to feel like myself again.
Never again. These days I do a short session most trip mornings, and it changes the whole game. Twenty minutes later I’m awake, proud of myself and ready for breakfast.
Jet lag waking you up at 5 a.m.? Perfect, that’s your workout window calling. Some of my best hotel sessions have happened at hours I’d never choose at home.
And the calories are honestly the smallest part of it. What those 20 minutes really do is keep the promise you made to yourself, so coming home feels like a continuation, not a restart. Consistency beats intensity, every single time.
Bonus: morning movement gives you energy for the fun stuff. Even short bouts count, according to the WHO’s activity guidelines. Every bit of movement adds up.
More energy for museum mornings and gelato scouting? YES please. 🙌

The 20-Minute Hotel Room Workout (No Equipment)
Here’s the setup: 6 moves, 3 rounds, 45 seconds of work and 15 seconds of rest. Your phone timer is the only piece of gear you need.
Everything here is low-impact on purpose: no jumping, no burpees, no thundering around at dawn. The people in the room below you will never know you worked out.
Go through them in order, rest about a minute between rounds, and you’ll be done in about 20 minutes, warm-up included.
If you’re sharing the room, this works while everyone else is still asleep. If your travel buddy wants in, even better: take turns counting each other’s rounds.
First, a 2-Minute Warm-Up
March in place, roll your shoulders, add a few easy squats and some hip circles. Two minutes, just enough to wake everything up.
#1 Slow Squats. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and sit back like there’s a chair behind you, counting to three on the way down. Squeeze your booty at the top, because that slow tempo turns a simple squat into a real challenge.
#2 Incline Push-Ups on the Desk. Hands on the desk edge or the bed, body in one strong line, lower your chest and press back up. In a hotel room, the furniture is your equipment.
#3 Glute Bridges. Lie on your back with your feet flat, push through your heels and lift your hips, squeezing the booty at the top. Completely silent, so it’s perfect for early mornings.
#4 Dead Bugs. On your back with arms up and knees bent, extend the opposite arm and leg out slowly, then switch sides. Keep your lower back glued to the floor, and your core will be shaking by round two, promise.
#5 Wall Sit. Slide your back down the wall until your thighs are parallel to the floor and hold. It burns, it’s quiet, and all it costs you is one wall.
#6 Plank Shoulder Taps. From a plank (knees down if you need them), tap your left hand to your right shoulder, then switch. Move slowly so your hips stay still, quality over quantity.
Twenty minutes, sweaty and silent. Done. 💪
Cool Down on the Bed
Sit on the edge of the bed and fold over your legs for a slow stretch through your hammies, then lie back and hug your knees into your chest. Give it a minute and you’re officially on vacation.

My Stay-Fit-While-Traveling Rules
These five rules travel with me everywhere, workout or no workout. ✈️
#1 Do it before breakfast. Travel days will eat your plans alive: meetings, museums, dinners, delays. Mornings are non-negotiable on trips, so lay out your workout clothes the night before.
#2 Walk everywhere you can. Skip the taxi, take the stairs, wander the new city on foot. On my last trip I clocked 20,000 steps a day just from sightseeing, and that IS a workout, yep!
#3 Pack one tiny thing. A resistance band weighs nothing and turns any room into a mini gym. It’s optional, but it’s the one travel luxury I never leave home without.
#4 Sip water all day. Flying dries me out like crazy, and I always mistake thirst for hunger when I travel. Keeping a bottle on me fixes both.
#5 Forgive the messy days. Some days will be pure chaos and the workout just won’t happen, so what? Something is always better than nothing, and one missed session changes nothing in the long run.

Hotel Room Workout FAQ
Can I really get results without any equipment?
Absolutely, as long as you keep it challenging. Slow down the tempo, shorten the rests, add a fourth round, or work one side at a time. Your muscles don’t know the difference between a dumbbell and a hard set; they only know effort.
My hotel room is TINY. Will this still work?
A yoga-mat-sized patch of floor is genuinely all you need: squats, wall sits, bridges and dead bugs all stay in one spot, and the push-ups just borrow the desk. If even that’s too tight, take it to the hallway or the stairwell. 😅
How often should I work out on vacation?
I aim for every other day, and I never let it ruin the fun. Twenty minutes every other day keeps the momentum alive, and all the sightseeing steps count double. It’s your trip first and your workout second.

Ready, Set, GO!
One tiny room, one phone timer, zero excuses between you and your goals. The girls who stay fit while traveling aren’t more disciplined than you, they just have a plan for the messy days.
Now you have that plan too. Save this workout in your phone, and the next time you’re wide awake at 6 a.m. in a strange city, you’ll know exactly what to do with that little patch of floor.
Keep going, keep loving yourself, and never ever give up! Love, Monica
